Drunks and other poems is prose based around AA meetings and a mans story to sobriety. Kinda has that feeling when Jim Carroll's words are read out loud.
Poems for Ruth is amazing and touching. The authors last few chapters are very well written.
I'm not a drinker and don't need any AA meetings. I don't even know why I wanted to read this. Maybe the word "drunk" caught my eye. Glad I read recommended reading.
Here is a few lines from book:
"She wakes up later now.
The clock is showing signs of running down.
For a long time, the energy level was the same, the days were getting shorter.
Now you can detect some changes in the level of activity. Sometimes there is pain; you cannot help but see it. She would hide it if she could."
"We forgive you that your body has begun to resist the demands you make on it in our behalf. The time has come to rest upon your laurels. The canvas is painted now.
There is no room for one more brushstroke. Time to sit back
and gaze upon what you have made."
